I’m starting a series of Tech. tips. Here’s my first.




Painter’s Tech tip #1

What is wrong with this picture? No, it’s not the fact that it looks like a messed up watercolor painting. I did that on purpose.
I borrowed the picture off of the internet, and smudged it so as not to give away who the paint job or picture was from. I tried my best to make it not recognizable. I don’t want to slam anyone else’s paint work. In the original custom painted gas tank picture the paint was nice & flames were nice. There may not be anything wrong with the picture if the frame on the bike is Yellow.

The reason for the photo is to show mount tabs are painted yellow like the front of the custom paint. Many painters, when custom painting gas tanks, etc, don’t take into consideration what color the frame on the bike is. Unless you’re building a one off chopper from the frame up, chances are you’re not changing the standard stock frame black color to the same colors as your new custom paint job. How does the painter know to paint the tabs black if you don’t point it out to the painter, and special request it, chances are they are going to paint it as is. The mount tabs should be the same color as the frame so they don't stick out like sore thumbs. I even see stock paint jobs this way. Hey, welcome to my mount tabs. Maybe I'm too picky. But I am into customs.

  1. It's funny how something like that wouldn't even come to mind if you don't work with it like you do. I would like to paint my Glide someday. She's ten years old, and I would like to spiff her up a bit. This bike has been garage kept her whole life, so she doesn't look ten (why so we refer to our bikes as she?). My frame is black, and H and I thought how cool it would look with black pipes, also. I'm sort of partial to chrome, but I've been thinking that over more. I will just have to continue to ponder on that for now though. Thanks for the tip! Lady R

    Glad you found my paint tip interesting. There'll be more to come. My next few paint Tech. tips will be kind of on the same line as the first. Shall I say kind of a continuation. It's in the details. You don't have to be a painter for some of these, and they apply to stock bikes as well as customs.

    As for chrome, vs. black pipes. I like both.

    So as for you, good luck with what ever you pick. If you pick good ones, let me know so I can live vicariously through you.

  3. Now that you've pointed that out, I'm going to have a look at mine tomorrow when I get her back.

    Why she and not he? It's a matter of personal choice of course, but there are many reasons going back many years. Look for a post on my blog tomorrow which will shed some light on that age-old tradition.

    Regarding your comment on your tank. Sorry, I meant to turn off comment moderation. I was screwing around with some of my settings and forgot about it.

    If you do have a silver colored tab that sticks out, I got a solution. You don't have to repaint, or re clearcoat the whole tank to fix it.

    Let me know.

  5. Thanks for that tip, also. I'm planning to get a custom paint job done in the future, and I never would have thought to request that, although I would have been mad if they didn't do it.I firmly believe that everything should blend nice & clean.

  7. I checked the tank and that front tab is painted silver, but they use a big black plastic cover like a washer under the bolt to mostly cover it and make it appear to match the black frame. A cheapo shortcut, but I can live with it.
