Road names, Many of us have one, many of us don't.
Blog names, Most of us got.
A road name is traditionally not picked by the bearer of the name, but rather is bestowed upon them by a fellow rider of a group. Usually for something they have done, or in a way a right of passage earned in many cases.
A road name can be simply a nickname, a joke of sorts, or an honorable title.
I have no road name, as I do not typically ride in groups, or belong to a MC, or even a HOG chapter. I have a blog name that was bestowed onto me by an anonymous blogger, and to keep names secret, decided that when talking about me, Mr. Motorcycle was fitting. So when I started my blog, the name just fit, and it stuck.
The stories behind the names are what truly make them interesting.

How many of you remember the crazy throat-thumping biker from the movie "Animal House"? I've been told by several people that I look like him. Especially when I curl up the ends of my moustache. His name in the movie was "D-Day".
Two weeks ago, Jay & I went with another couple from our HOG chapter down to Outer Banks NC on a scouting mission for our club's spring trip. Over the course of the weekend we all got road names. Ed is now known as "Bull-Slap" and Karen's name is "Tombstone". We had a really tough time coming up with a name for me. "Irish" was in the running because of my temper that can flare up and just about knock you dead, but Karen said if she had to have a mean/evil sounding name then so did I....besides, it was a little too cliche. So we decided on "Bullet". (Hey, you gotta do something to entertain yourself on a 6-hour road trip!)
ReplyDeleteIt all started with Jay's new road name "Boozer"...I'll leave it to him to tell you how that came about.
HMmmm. I guess my "road name" and my "blog name" have kind of been merged together. B.B. was my nickname when I was a kid, it was my initials, and also stood for Boo Boo which is what my family called me. I hadn't told Dave that when he came up with B.B. For him it stands for a few things:

Just about nobody in The South can say my name without turning into a different name. Which drives me completely nuts, I'd rather answer to Ralph than a butchering of my name. So I settled on being called J - nobody can screw up ONE letter, right?
ReplyDeleteWhen I joined my local MRO we were ordering name patches at a meeting. They asked me what I wanted on my patch and I said "J."
And patch lady was writing J A Y and I corrected her saying, "NO, just J."
And since that meeting, everyone calls me Just J.
Which was cool until Will & Grace came around with that JUST JACK!! bit. *snort*
Woody is what I grew up with and new and old will still call me that. Now the 1%ers in town called me Perv because I could pervert anything a tree, commercial, a silo it did not matter I'd pervert it. As for my blog name..Well I coined that name sitting around a bond fire drinking and smoking hooch. We were talking about how folks in our small town referred to us as Webster Road people. Webster Rd having a few homes we partied hard with kegs and alike. The town folks and the cops showed up often. Anyway we are talking about that reference and the fact we are not a road. And I said " Yea we're not a road we live in a world of our own we're Webster World" And it stuck. Most of us have a WW tattooed some place too. Some in very interesting places:)
ReplyDeleteMr. Motorcycle...You raise a good point and question. My Blog name was scribbled down on a napkin at a coffee house. I just wanted a blog name that would depict and chronicle my life as a rider, writer, father, friend, brother, etc...and life in general...However, you inspired me to do some research on web names and look what I found:

I did Joker for my blog, basically on my own. I just didn't want to use my real name. I'm a big fan of Jack Nicholson, and loved his version of the Joker from the first modern Batman movie, so I went with it.
ReplyDeleteVery conscious of 'you're not supposed to give yourself a road name,' I never mentioned it while riding with Blackstone. Eventually though, word of my blog got around and some people started calling me Joker. When name tag time came, I actually put "John" on the list, but Wendy over-ruled me and said, "No, you're definitely Joker."
So that was that. Even so, some people still call me John and that's fine. I don't really care. I know that if something noteworthy happens on the road, I may earn a new roadname on the spot, whether I like it or not!
The kids gave me a coffee cup that said Harley Dude for watching the grand puppies. When I started the blog I added Arizona to the front because Harley Dude was already taken.
ReplyDeleteWhen I first started riding on my own, I would drive my hubby crazy with wanting to go, go, go! I would come home from work and ride around the neighborhood for a couple hours every day just so I could ride. Every time we went riding with others and we would stop, I would be ready to roll again before anyone else was ready to leave. It became kind of a joke with my pals and my hubby that, "the new would wear off soon" and I wouldn't want to be riding as much. THAT never happened!
ReplyDeleteWhen I started blogging, I wanted to come up with a pen name. We toyed with several things, but what sealed it was when I heard my hubby talking to one of our pals, and they said, "that lady sure likes to ride a lot". It didn't take much to settle on Lady Ridesalot or Lady R for short.
Now, a lot of my friends refer to me as Lady R and a few other things, like Lady Talksalot, or Lady Blogsalot. But, it's all good.
Errr...well, it was "the saint", but that was many years ago. Given to me because I was the the nicest asshole around. I took a break from the bike scene where that ended.
ReplyDeleteNow, V.D. formed from a JD session on a run. We got talking about ancestory and tats. Mine were from Denmark and so was my tat. So Cowboy said "Viking Dave"...then laughed, almost falling over, and said "VD for short." You can imagine all the jokes that came after that. Since then it's been ol'e VD.

ReplyDeleteLong version goes something like this. While out chasing beers an babes with a bro and finding plenty of the former, less of the latter. We stop in a fine establishment for more of the former hoping for the latter. While me and the bro were fixing all the worlds problems this cute gal (that does depend on the amount of the former right?) walks up. Mustering all the cool I had remaining thinking hey things are looking up, she just looks at me and says "you've got the fastest hair I've even seen" and promptly walks away. My bro seeing all of this asks "what are you going to do now fasthair" laughing his ass off. Since I still had a little bit of cool left I said "wait for her to come back." Needless to say she never even so much as give me a second look the rest our time there. But hey I got a cool nick name out of it so it wasn't a total loss.
OK some of that was total BS. My bro and I weren't really trying to fix all the worlds problems :)

ReplyDeleteWe had a couple of strippers at a party my club threw, and when they were down to just their smiles they announced, "Put a dollar over your head if you want a lap dance." I put up two dollars. That's why they call me Two Buck Chuck.

My road name is Boston, because nobody here knows how to deal with my accent, but they all love it! It was given to me by my BACA crew.

My blog name is GYMONR, I have been using this name for years and no one has a clue where I got it from. It all started somewhere around 25 years ago, we open our gym in Petal Mississippi “Body Flex Fitness Center” well during the time we owned it (17 years) custom car tags were the big thing but at the time you could only get six letters on you car tag in Mississippi. So I came up with the name GYM-ON-R (It stands for GYM OWNER) well needless to say it stuck.

My new nick name is Boozer! Apparently my HOG chapter is a little bit on the conservative side... it caused a minor fuss when I had one beer during a HOG chapter ride a few weeks ago. The gossip and rumors started to fly. I guess it doesn't help that I'm the Director and should set the responsible example. Anyhow, now that the fuss is over i am having fun with the new nick name and trying to live up to my new rep.
ReplyDeleteMy road name was a complete and total FLUKE!!! While deployed to Iraq, I was messing around online and found a 1% Biker Road Name site where you enter your First name, last name, age, and gender and the site generates your roadname and 1% biker club name. After I put in the info it spit out Knucklehead, and since I'm the veritable Smart Ass White Boy, all the guys that were sitting there that rode together just busted out laughing and said that's the one!
