Son's of Anarchy review

I watched the season premier of Son's of Anarchy last night, and boy oh boy was it good, I mean really good. I'm hooked for sure. I can only hope the rest of the show will be as good as the season premier.

I'm not going into any details about the show, just in case you missed it. If so, hopefully you'll find a way to see it if someone recorded it, or maybe they'll replay the premier and you can watch it for yourselves. If you need details, let me know via e-mail and I'll be happy to fill you in.

The show was just as good as they had built it up to be.

  1. Funny how some loved it, and some hated it. Guess that's the way things go... not everyone loves a Van Gogh painting...

  2. Mike Werner,
I'm gonna guess the folks who hated it STILL watch American Chopper to this day. (Don't get me wrong, American Chopper was a show I used to watch and love myself). But when it became all about the antics, and not about the bikes, and Vinnie left, it just got old to me. Plus the theme bikes thing is gettin old, REALLY old. I bet the people who hated Son's of Anarchy thought it was going to be all about motorcycles, motorcycles and more motorcycles. Maybe they did not read your September 2nd post, where you got a sneak preview and reviewd the show yourself. I liked it 'cause I knew what to expect going in.

  3. I don't know that I was "blown away" by it. I enjoyed it enough though that I'll probably watch it.

(And no, I haven't watched American Chopper in a few years.)

  4. Dean,

I totally agree with you. I was not "blown away" by it either, but still thought is was a really good. I think the quality is there, and the writers now have a lot to live up to. If they can pull this off, I think they'll have a huge success on their hands. They've just got to be able to keep up the momentum they started with and the show will build and only get better. Hopefully we have not seen the best the show has to offer in the premier.

I look at it like a song you hear on the radio for the first time. If it is so good you absolutely love it to death the first time you hear it, You'll likely love it to death, and not want to hear it any more. But if it is good, really good, the more you hear it, the more you learn to love it, and it becomes one of your favorites.

And by the way. No offense meant to people who still watch American Chopper. To each their own. It's just not for me anymore. I've grown past that show.

  5. Since we still have the old rabbit ears, we didn't see it.:(

I'm hoping to get cable soon, though. I'm glad it was good. Can't wait to see it.

  6. Hmm...sorry, Dave and I watched it and I wasn't all that impressed. The only thing that impressed me was Drea De Matteo. Just my opinion. BTW...I've never watched American Chopper. :)

  7. I'm going to give it a chance but it's going to have to pick up a little. I was a big fan of the Sopranos because it just seemed like it was so real...what it would be like in the Mafia. This show just seemed like a bunch of actors getting together to play biker...I want to believe that they live the life and would stand behind their bros till the end. I want it to seem real even though I know it really is just a show...not like...we are playing biker Take 1...ok...enough being a biker for now...CUT! Plus...did they swear at all? I can't remember...I'm going to have to give it another watch today...if they didn't...WTF? Every Biker I know says a few swear words here and there even if they aren't Outlaw Bikers. I remember Katie Segal saying whore...wow..intense!

Now onto American Choppers...they can pretty much take that dumb show off the AIR. BORING! I lost respect for them in 2004 at Sturgis when I realized to meet them I'd have to pay like $20 bucks...no thanks...not that important to me. This year there was a Semi and a regular Joe standing by there old THEME bikes...no Jr. Sr. or Mikey...Now...Russell Mitchel and Exile Choppers...that was some TV! :)~

  8. I forgot and went to bed. You could see it was going to be a sitcom. Just how good we will see. When I have the time I'll see if I can watch it on this here machine like my wife watches Grey's a day or two later. You know old H A's pres. Sonny B. was in on this project and is pissed off for no $$$ or credit. Read where his was going to court to stop the release. Have to keep an eye and ear open. See what thats about.

  9. IHG, they did swear a little. It's FX, so it's about 50/50 on what cursing you can say, ya know? I thought it was good. At times it seemed a little forced-biker, but hopefully the actors will get comfy in the next episodes. And I got emotional with the whole baby side-story... but that's just me and my baby fever I guess haha!

And speaking of American Chopper, Josh HATES that show. Every time he'd see it on he would start ranting on how they don't make bikes-- it's all fabrication, blah blah blah. Every time I've seen it I think that Mikey guy is sooo out of place. He's like a step-son that Jr and Sr HAVE to include, know what I mean?

When I was watching last night I kept wondering who in our blog-family would like it too. :)

  10. Dean,
Why yes, please do tell us how you really feel about OCC. LOL!

    Ann,
I hope you get to see it soon.

    BB.,
Sorry you and Dave didn't like it. But I knew going in it was more of a drama than biker sh*t.
Re: American Chopper. I did actually like it at one point. I thought it just got old.

    IHG,
See comment above for BB. I knew it was more drama than not. I liked it. Then again I got exactly what I expected, maybe more.
Re: American Choppers, Boy I guess I stirred up a hornets nest here Huh?

    Webster World,
When you do get the chance to watch your DVR or Tivo recording, I hope you enjoy it.
Re: "You know old H A's pres. Sonny B. was in on this project and is pissed off for no $$$ or credit. Read where his was going to court to stop the release."
I'm going to have to admit that I'm completely clueless as to what you are talking about. Please inform me. You've got my curiosity up now.

    Connie,
I'm glad SOMEONE who watched it liked it besides me. Maybe I'm just thenthitive. I liked the baby drama too. I even watch chick flicks with my wife. (OH NO! Cat's out of the bag! Mr. M. has a sensitive side!)
And I know what you mean about Mikey.

  11. Mr. M...I rewatched it after work and it kinda grew on me. I'll give it a few more watches to see where it goes.

  12. I missed the show and I have no input. I've just been cut off for 6 days and I wanted to say something.
    :D

  13. Didn't see it, Would like to.
O.C.C Don't get me started...I'm trying to write a story.
And I can't do that if I spend the next few days typing all that I hate about those Assholes:]

  14. Sonny Barger was the President of the Hell's Angels Oakland capter I think. The law says he is Pres. of all H A's I read where he was an adviser to the program. They boned him some how and I guess he wants to sue. He has a site. Sonny Barger.com

  15. IHG,
See, It's like a good song. It'll grow on ya.

    Lady R. and Big D.,
You gotta give it a looksee.

    Webser World,
Thanks for the info. but I need you to do some more digging if you can, Re: the being boned thing and wanting to sue. I went to Sonnybarger.com., searched the whole damned site, and found nothing speaking of this. I'm not doubting this has any validity, but would like confirmation if you can find it somewhere. Or is it all just rumors???
Re: Sonny in Oakland, go to sonnybarger.com, then go to press and media section, then go to Rueters Mar 17th, 2008 article. It's a really good article that tells you all about his beginnings, and brings you up to date with where he's at today. Thanks for the lead. This was a good short read. I certainly learned more about him in a few minutes than I've known about him all my life.

  16. There were two scenes that I really got off on.

1)The first scene where he is riding without the helmet smoking a cig. and smiling. I identified with that...then they totally lost me.

2)The second scene I liked was where Jax told the guy who had the two kids and wife to stay home and take care of his family instead of riding to lodi to stick dynamite up some guys ass.

I'll give it one more shot, but honestly, this one won't make a whole season. I was going to post on what I thought but sometimes it's best not to say anything if you can't say anything nice.

However brother, more power to you if you enjoyed it. That is all that matters anyway and I'll stand by that. Screw those of us who just didn't dig it.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Dave,
I liked the second scene you talked about too.

Re: posting only if you have something nice to say, I hear you, especially if it is on someone elses blog that you respect, however, don't ever hold back here brother. Feel free to speak your mind. Besides, I didn't write the show. So no offense would have been taken. We all have different opinions, likes and dislikes.

  18. I was really psyched to watch this show last week mainly because we never see bikes in a TV show other than some cheesy "bad boy" character who sits on his bike in a scene every now and then.

The only negatives I saw were that some of the cinematography was a little low budget looking and the acting seemed a bit forced in a couple scenes. I'm hoping we can chalk this up to the fact that it was the pilot episode and the future shows will be better. I can't wait to see the 2nd episode on wed.

I still watch every American Chopper but only to see the bikes. Some of the theme bikes are pretty lame and most are hardly rideable but it still beats most TV out there today.

  19. Greg,
    Thanks for your say.
I agree with you regarding having some bikes in a show for once, and not just the 2 second blip across the screen on a geico commercial or something. It's refreshing.

  20. I think "Sons" is the victim of over-anticipation here.

This reminds me of a certain film critic from the Boston Herald newspaper who seems to compare everything to movies like "The English Patient." If it's not serious Oscar contention, he thinks it sucks. The man seems to have lost the ability to decide if a decent effort is at least entertaining, if not award winning.

I'm a biker and I think I have an idea what bikers are like. I am not an outlaw biker. I have no idea what they are like. So, how's the view from the cheap seats? Who am I to criticize these folks who seem to have put a good effort forward in bringing "The Sopranos" onto two wheels? How would I have done it if I was the producer? How would any of you have done it?

In all honesty, "Sons" is one of those shows that needs some time to see if they develop it well. I know that I thought Katey Sagal was really great in her role. The supporting cast wasn't bad either, and I'm willing to give them a season to take the ball and run with it. This type of show is a bit outside the box - for that reason alone it is to be appreciated just a little.

I'm not reserving a room at the Emmys just yet. But what I've seen so far kept me interested enough not to switch channels during the commercials to see what else was on. Maybe I'm a bit prejudiced because two of the characters are Jackson and Wendy. Let's see where this goes; after all, aren't we all always up for a ride to parts unknown??

I say we finish the ride and have our dinner before we tell the Road Captain it sucked.

  21. Joker,
Thanks for your insight. I usually like your perspective on things.

This time was definately one of them.

  22. I loved the show.Granted anyone looking for a realistic portrayal was probably let down but it is very entertaining.Sonny Barger sued HBO over "1%" He was consulted and worked with by its writer and creator not SOA.Kent Sutter the SOA creator has it in his blog and sutterink.com.SOA has 2 ta's one of which is with Oakland chapter of HA.For anyone who missed the pilot and wants too see it its on hulu.com

As far as Americam Chopper goes.I quit watching a few years ago when it became about the antics not the bikes and from hearing a couple local mechanics talking that had the displeasure of working on a couple of their off the shelf bikes their picture should be put beside "garbagewagon" in the dictionary

  23. kdrummero1,
Thanks for the insight on SOA.
I checked out your source. Correction. It is Kurt Sutter, not Kent Sutter, and your source was legit. Again Thanks. You can see the exact post at: http://sutterink.blogspot.com/2008/09/for-record.html.

  24. Well here I am in a timely jhonny on the spot review.
    Thanks for the hulu link.
I just saw the first episode.
Too early to tell, but it seems off to a good start.
there's a few hiccups but overall not bad.
As for the realisim, every club I have ever seen has it's own identity, they stayed pretty well to the premise.

  25. Big D.,

Glad you finally got to see it.

For the exact reason of the 8 day delay on hulu.com, I will not give out any specific information about an episode on my reviews that will give away the show. If others do, Well You only have yourself to blame for reading a review before watching the show. Stay tuned!

  26. I don’t watch TV a lot, but when I do it is mostly only when Sons of Anarchy is on TV. SOA is definitely my favorite show which is why I feel so bad for Directv customers. Once Directv loses their contract with FOX, they will have to remove all FOX channels and that means no more SOA for Directv customers. I am just grateful to be a DISH Network customer/employee because I won’t have to worry about joining an angry mob to get my channels back.

Wish I was. Inspead, I joined th angry mob. I'm really quite P.O.'d about this. I will swithc if I loose FOX / FX.
